In January 2025 my family lost our home in the Los Angeles wildfires. When I say lost, I mean the only things left standing were the chimney and the mailbox.
In the weeks after, five year plans didn't mean much. Every morning there was insurance, a home search, two kids, and a whole bunch of other stuff all fighting for the same day. What got me through was one question I started asking myself before anything else.
"Out of everything I could do today, what will make today matter?"
Some days the answer was the insurance call. Some days it was the home search. Some days it was time with my kids and nothing else. The question let me stiff arm everything that didn't matter that day. That question became The 1-Day Method.
What is The 1-Day Method?
The short answer: The 1-Day Method is a daily operating system for leaders and founders. It's built on one question, three priorities, and five daily acts. Every morning you ask "What will make today matter?", you name your Essential 3, the three priorities that would make today a win, and you run five simple daily acts. Then you do it again tomorrow.
One question. 3 priorities. Five acts. Repeat.
Why one day and not one year?
Because most people's days aren't theirs anymore.
Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index found that the average employee gets interrupted every 2 minutes during the workday. That's 275 times a day, between meetings, emails, and chats. Nearly half of employees, and 52% of leaders, say their work feels chaotic and fragmented. One in three say the pace of the last five years has made it impossible to keep up.
You can't plan your way out of that with a better five year plan. The year is too big. The day is the only unit you actually control.
And I'll be honest, I'm guilty of this too. I've had plenty of days where I was busy from 6 AM to 10 PM and couldn't tell you one thing that actually mattered. Busy isn't the same as winning the day.
How The 1-Day Method works
The question: what will make today matter?
Ask it before you open your inbox. Before the inbox, the day is still yours. After, it belongs to whoever emailed you first.
The Essential 3
Name three things that would make today a win. Not ten. Not a to do list with 27 items on it. Three. There's a line in the book I come back to all the time: if you have more than three priorities, you have none.
I like to pick one that shapes the future, one that strengthens the present, and one that honors the path I'm on. If those three get done, it was a good day, even if the inbox says otherwise.
The five acts
Then there are five simple things you do every day.
- Sweat. Move your body. Twenty minutes counts.
- Connect. One real conversation with a human being. Not a text. Not a like.
- Grow. Stay curious. Learn something you didn't know yesterday.
- Tech Free. Ten minutes with no screen. No phone, no laptop, nothing buzzing.
- Finish. Complete one thing all the way. Keep one promise to yourself.
The evening question
At night you look back and ask a simpler question: what mattered? Not to grade yourself. Just to notice what moved. Then tomorrow morning you start again.
Who The 1-Day Method is for
It's for the people running everything. Directors, VPs, founders, partners. Competent, well paid, and carrying a life that got heavier without anybody announcing it. Kids, aging parents, a stretch role, a reorg.
You run everything. Who runs you?
It's also for teams. When a whole team names its Essential 3 out loud, everybody knows what actually matters today, and it gets a lot harder to confuse activity with progress.
How organizations bring The 1-Day Method to their teams
I deliver The 1-Day Method a few different ways depending on what an organization needs.
- Keynote. The story, the question, and the framework for a full room. Works for kickoffs, all hands meetings, and conferences, especially when people are tired and stretched thin.
- Workshop, in person or virtual. Teams actually build their Essential 3 and practice the method together, so they leave with something on paper and not just notes.
- Coaching. Group or one on one, for leaders who want to run the method for 30 days with someone holding them to it.
You can see the full keynote description on my speaking page.
The book, the planner, and the app
If you want to try it yourself first, there are three ways in.
- The 1-Day Method book walks through the whole method and where it came from.
- The 1-Day Method planner is the daily companion. The question, the Essential 3, the five acts, and a place to write down what mattered.
- The Question is an app that asks you one question every morning: what will make today matter?
FAQs
Q: What is The 1-Day Method?
A: A daily operating system created by Antonio Neves. One question (what will make today matter?), three priorities called the Essential 3, and five daily acts: Sweat, Connect, Grow, Tech Free, and Finish.
Q: Where did The 1-Day Method come from?
A: Antonio created it after his family lost their home in the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. One daily question helped him decide what mattered each day when long term plans stopped making sense.
Q: What is the Essential 3?
A: The three priorities that would make today a win. Naming only three forces you to choose instead of letting the inbox choose for you.
Q: Can The 1-Day Method work for teams?
A: Yes. Antonio delivers it as a keynote, as an in person or virtual workshop, and through group and one on one coaching.
Q: Is The 1-Day Method just a productivity system?
A: Not really. Productivity systems help you do more. The 1-Day Method helps you decide what's worth doing today, and lets the rest wait.
Final Word
Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week. It's where we put everything we didn't do today.
So what will make today matter?
If you want your team asking that question, let's talk.
